Fonts

These were the fonts that I considered for the title of my film. This font will appear on my film trailer at the end, film poster and my film magazine front cover. Using the same font for the title of my film throughout the three media platforms will ensure that the audience will remember and recognize my film.

This is the font I have chosen for my title of my film.
I chose this font because it reflects a sinister and ghostly image.
It is also simple but effective and is not too creative which would make the film seem unserious.

Making of my Film Poster

The photo shoot for my film poster was created at home. I chose this option over a studio because the image I wanted was very simple and close up and a studio would not have been necessary. I also had appropriate and sufficient lighting and a good, effective camera. I chose this image because I feel it is a strong, creepy image that gets the film genre across to the audience immediately. This MIME make-up represents the key horror aspect in the storyline so I thought this would be suitable for the poster to entice the target audience. I used a black background as this colour is most associated with horror and ghost stories and blends nicely into my actresses hair. The black also matches the stripes in her top and her black make eye make-up. The black is also a nice contrast to her white face make-up.

I then added the important information at the bottom of the poster. This information is not a part of the poster itself but is necessary information. The credits are in white so they show up on the black background and they include the director, sound editor ect. I then added in the Facebook page and website on the bottom left hand side underneath the credits. Social networking is a huge part of advertising a film so this is key information. I chose a simple and appropriate size font and style for this information. The COMING SOON is an important for a film poster as this lets the audience know when the film is coming out. "COMING SOON" excites the target audience, if they like the look of the poster, and not clarifying a date will encourage them to keep checking when the film is going to come out. I put this font in red so it is a nice contrast to the white information and stands out to the reader. I finally added my company logo in the right bottom corner. I changed the colour to white so it stands out on the black background.

At this stage I added in the two main actresses' names, LUCY MULVAIN and SOPHIE WEARMOUTH. I put this font in red to match the "coming soon" and to contrast with the title of the film. I put the film title big and almost central, this allows it to be the main focus of the poster as well as the main image. I deliberately put "LIES" over her mouth to symbolise the connection of speaking the lies. The "HIDDEN" is over the black background to symbolise what is hidden in the darkness.

Underneath my film title I added in my tagline. This introduces the mysterious character "she" and brings up the question of who she is and what is her purpose. I then added in my review. This is also help entice my target audience into coming to see the film if someone has reviewed it highly and given it five stars.

Colour Scheme - Film Poster

These are three popular colours that my target audience said would be most effective on a film poster front cover.

BLACK - symbolises death, murder, darkness, gothic, alienation, sadness, depression, the unknown. It is usually associated with ghost and horror stories/films.

WHITE  - symbolises purity, innocence and hints at the fact there was an innocent murder which relates to my storyline. White is a nice contrast to the black.

RED - symbolises love, blood, danger, passion, anger.

Photo shoot Planning

This is my first actress, LUCY MULVAIN, she will be playing the part of the MIME and one of the sisters. She will be on the front of my film poster.
This is my second actress, SOPHIE WEARMOUTH, she will be playing the part of one of the sisters and she will be featured on the front of my film magazine as she is the main character.

For my film magazine front cover I will be using a professional studio in order to take these images. This will look professional and give my magazine an overall classic look. These are some of my emails organising this event.

These are the text messages contacting my actresses asking them to take part in my film trailer and the photo shoot.

Making of my Film magazine front cover

I shot this photo in a professional studio. I chose this image, out of many, because it is taken at a good angle where eye contact is given to the audience. The hooded coat I feel adds a mysterious and cold tone to the image which reflects the genre of the film. The grey background compliments the black coat and the white text contrasts with both of these colours. The font I chose for the magazine title is bold yet simple and effective. This font title would stand out on the shelf in a store. I chose the title "motion" for a film magazine because it reflects key film terminology, for example, motion picture.

In this stage I added the bar code, the price and the date. This is necessary information for a magazine. I also included the Facebook page and the website for the magazine, as young people are active users of the internet and social networking and young people are my target audience. Above this I gave the reader a sneak peak to what else can be found in my magazine, these three films will have a small feature inside.

Underneath the magazine title I added in a little sentence about the magazine to make it appear more realistic. I then added in my three sell lines. I used buzz words to try and attract my target audience. I put this font in white to match the other writing and to fit in with the black, white and grey colour scheme.

At this stage I added in the main sell line about my film. I used the same font I had used throughout but put "HIDDEN LIES" in the font I had used on my trailer and on my poster. This will stand out to the audience and will make them recognise my film.

Finally I added in a free gift to accompany my magazine. I put this advertisement in muddy red so it stands out compared to the other text on the page, but not too bright so it in keeps with the theme and doesn't distract from the other text on the cover. This advertisement will hopefully entice my audience to buy the magazine.

Reflection on last years performance...

Last year, for my magazine, I shot the images at home using a hand held camera and lighting from a bedroom lamp.
For my film magazine this year I improved this setting my booking a place at the studio at Sunderland University. This studio room had a white backdrop, professional lighting (plus an option for coloured lighting) and a professional camera (and the option of a tripod) This establishment obviously improved my photos, both the quality and the overall professional outcome.

  • Shadows are not present on this years photographs
  • Backdrop is smoother on this years photographs
  • General quality of photographs are better in this years photographs

The "Recce"

The "Recce" for my magazine front cover photo shoot and my film poster photo shoot.
1.    Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects )?
Magazine: Yes, as I have booked a studio in Sunderland there will be traffic on the way.
Poster: Not really, as this photo shoot will take place at my house and my actress only lives up the road.
2.    What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?Magazine: Both my actress and myself will leave in plenty of time to get to the studio to ensure that traffic does not make us late.
Poster: N/A
3.    Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?Magazine: No, as this will take place inside a studio.
Poster: No, because I will be taken the photographs inside my house at night, using artificial lighting.
4.    Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?Magazine: The background will be a white backdrop inside the studio. I can edit the colour of this on photo shop to suit my magazine.
Poster: The background will be a black backdrop but my actress will take up much of the poster anyway as I am using a close up image.
5.    Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?Magazine: I will be using artificial lighting in the studio both from the camera flash itself and the two big professional shooting lights. There is no windows so streaming light through the window will not be a problem.
Poster: I will be using artificial lighting for my poster image also. I will be shooting at night so no light streaming in the window will be a problem. I will be using a flash so I achieve the best quality photograph with my camera.
6.    Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?Magazine: Yes, I have confirmation emails on here.
Poster: No.
7.    Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio at Shiney)?Magazine: Yes, I will be using the studio at Sunderland University which I have confirmation emails on here.
Poster: No.
8.    Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?Magazine: No as I will be shooting inside a studio.
Poster: No as I will be shooting at home.
9.    Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?Magazine: I am relying on my friend to act as my model/actress. We have arranged a time to meet and a way to get to the studio.
Poster: I am relying on my friend to act as my model/actress. We have arranged a time to meet and she will be getting a lift.
I am supplying the props for both photo shoots; Make-up, clothes, watch, black ribbon, camera.

10. Finally, have you thought of every eventuality…?
Yes

Past Students Work

  1. SINISTER - The writing on the film poster was too difficult to read. There was also too much writing displayed therefore it did not make a effective poster. Despite this, the main image was rather scary, it had good effects on the eyes and it reflected the horror genre.

  2. INFENSUS - The film poster did not include relevant information that would be found on a professional film poster. Despite this the overall layout and the editing of the main image looked professional and effective. By looking at the poster you could immediately tell the genre: horror.

  3. UNDER ROGUE - In this tv programme poster there was far too much background. The boy in the background was too far away and looked irrelevant to the poster. The show is a drama therefore the choice of the realistic setting was effective.

After observing and talking about these three past student works we decided to give number 1 a grade C, number 2 a grade B and number 3 a grade D.

Considerations for Filming and location images

Actors:

  • Ghost / Spirit / Mime (Lucy)
In a horror/ghost story movie there is always a ghost or spirit of some sort. This is used in most of the "jumpy" scenes to scare the audience and is used in tense situations. This ghost is also used as the driving force to the narrative.
  • Two Sisters (Lucy and Sophie)

Crew:

  • Director (Myself)
  • Camera man (Myself)

Location:
  • Studio in Sunderland - This is what I used to take the images for my film magazine front cover.
  • My Bedroom - This was the location for certain scenes in my trailer. This is common for a horror movie to have haunted scenes in the bedroom and I wanted to follow this convention.
  • My Hallway - This is used to distinguish between each room.
  • My Garden - A different setting to inside a house and is used to show time and day.
I chose to use my house/garden for the whole setting instead of moving around different locations. In horror films they usually stick to one location that is particularly haunted so I decided to follow this common convention.

Props:

  • Antiques - Necklace, Ornaments, Books, Ball.
Antique looking items are also another common horror movie prop. They had mystery, creepiness and history.
  • Bag - to put items in

Costume:
  • Two Sisters - Modern everyday wear to in keep with the setting. Usually black and dark colours to match the tone and mood of the trailer.
  • Mime - black and white stripy top as this is a common and recognizable outfit for a mime character.
Make up:
  • Traditional Mime make up - white face, black eyes and eyebrows.
This makeup is creepy and haunting without being gory, bloody and unsuitable to my target audience.

LOCATION IMAGES (Location reece)

Horror films are usually set in one place and usually this consists of a haunted house. Therefore I will follow this convention and set my film in my house. These are the different rooms I will use.

Part of the Hallway. This door will be used for some scary and tense scenes.

My bedroom will be used for day and night scenes. A bedroom is a common convention used in horror films and where a lot of the haunted scenes occur.

A spare room.

My garden to establish the setting and to give a contrast to inside the house.

Another part of the hallway.

Downstairs hallway.

CONSENT

The two actresses I will be using are 18 therefore I do not need consent from their parents or guardians.

Storyboards

Storyboards are a visual representation of what the film is going to look like. It contains drawings and text.
It displays the variety of shot types in order for you to know where to film.
They are graphic organizers in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion pictureanimationmotion graphic or interactive media sequence.

What storyboards need...

What is the location setting?
How many actors are needed in the shot?
Do you need any important props or vehicles in the shot?
What type of shot? (close up/wide?)
What is the shot's angle where the camera is shooting from? (high/low?)
Direction of action?
Direction of camera? camera movement?
Special lighting? (lighting reflects mood)
Special effects?

Here is my initial story board for my film trailer. In the shooting process and in the editing process I made some improvements.

Questionnaire Graph Results

For each questionnaire I chose 4 vital questions that I thought would be most useful when creating each product. I took my target audience research and applied it to each of my tasks by basing my creative decisions from them.

I will make my magazine a weekly subscription.

I will price my magazine between £1-£2 (£1.50)

My main image will be the central element to my magazine front cover
and I will make this image striking with the use of lighting, editing and
the actress's facial expression.

I will make my film magazine an image led front cover.

I will make my film poster image led, therefore keeping text to a minimum and making
the main image the central visual point.

The colour scheme is very important therefore it will reflect and portray my genre immediately
to my target audience. I will use the colours red, black and white. A tag line is also
very important therefore I will chose one carefully having it reflect the storyline and giving
an exciting enticement to the target audience.

I will leave my tag line and rating/review to explain an insight into the film.

I will only use one main image on my film poster.

My target audience chose horror, thriller and action as their favourite film genres.
These are all elements in my film and film trailer.

Music is going to be a very important factor in my film trailer alongside sound effects both diagetic and non diagetic.

My film trailer will be shown at the cinema, online and on iphone and android apps.

My film trailer will excite my target audience and leave them wanting to go and see my film.
